However, the conventional coating strategy has an insurmountable contradiction: if the material particles are covered with a perfect coating before assembling the battery, the electrolyte is hard to diffuse into the material, causing the internal sulfur to fail to participate in the charging and discharging process. If the material is not Perfectly coated, the intermediate product of polysulfide during charging and discharging will still diffuse out of the positive electrode material, resulting in the shuttle effect.

 To do this, the researchers pre-engineered the carbon / sulfur composite particles into an imperfect pore-containing pre-coating and assembled the positive electrode made from this material into an electrolyte with a special additive. While the electrolyte infiltrates the carbon / sulfur particles, the additive reacts with the pre-coating to form a dense coating in situ on the exterior of the particles.

 The research shows that the coulombic efficiency and cycle life of the lithium-sulfur batteries adopting the new coating strategy are significantly improved, and the assembled batteries exhibit excellent cycle stability under high discharge rate conditions.
